Nice is the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department. Located on the French Riviera, on the south east coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of the Alps, Nice is the 5th largest city in France and the 2nd largest French city on the Mediterranean side with about 350 000 inhabitants. The city is nicknamed “Nissa la Bella” which means “Nice the Beautiful”. Nice has the charm of the Mediterranean cities where the beauty of the city is combined with an exceptional environment. It has the 2nd largest hotel capacity in the country, which allows it to welcome around 4 million tourists each year. It also has the 3rd airport in France and 2 convention centers devoted to business tourism. The city of Nice is the center of the Metropolis Nice Côte d’Azur, which brings together 49 municipalities with nearly 550,000 inhabitants.
The Mayor of the city, Christian ESTROSI, has been reelected a third term. He is also the President of the Metropolis Nice Côte d’Azur.
With a staff of 550 persons, the City of Nice is at the top of the workforce of the municipal police forces in France thanks to a sustained recruitment and investment policy. The city of Nice has always been a pioneer. This is particularly the case with the installation of pedestrian cameras which now equip municipal police officers. Nice was also the first city in France to choose to equip its staff with 9mm semi-automatic pistols. The Nice Municipal Police is also the first in France to have a Twitter account, providing information on its activity, recommendations and answering questions from the citizens.
The city of Nice coordinates the European Union Urban Agenda dedicated to urban security.
